Men in trees

Here's the next best thing to a chain saw.
An interesting way to take down a tree. First you hack at it with a sharp axe ( Marcos Hooley and Mark) and then you pull it down with a jeep. See video.

Another great method, as shown here by Mario, is hacking branches off with a machete. Hey it works! He still has all of his toes.We take a lot for granted here in the United States.

The GREAT pumpkin (or squash)

Fall is definitely here. There is a crispness in the air and the leaves are in full color.

It's time to carve the ole pumpkin. I enjoy making design rather than spooky faces. The cordless drill is a great help. All that power!

All a-glow.

Look- out! Sandra has never used a drill before. I hope she knows how they are normally used!

We also did some traditional carving as well. Takeyori and Sandra made some neat faces. We had a lot of huge zucchini and yellow squash and used them to make some jack-o-lanterns too.

Ta and Sandra's handiwork.
Stop by to check out our front porch display. Treats for everyone!

Good-bye Bolivia

Sandra and I flew home on American Airlines. The difficulties earlier in the week were settled and things were fine til our flight on Saturday evening. Since Sandra was coming home with me, they(Stansberry) rented a small bus to take anyone who wanted to go from the home to see us off. While Sandra and I waited at the ticket counter, the children from Stansberry rode up the escalator, walked back down the steps(yes, the escalator only goes up), then back up again, etc.....There were more people than are shown above on the group photo.

During the stay I had made many special friends at Stansberry and at Trinity Union Church. After tears, hugs and words of farewell, Sandra and I went through security. Our flight left Santa Cruz an hour late. We rescheduled our two remaining flights in Miami because of our late arrival. The flights were smooth and we arrived in Cleveland late Sunday afternoon. Thank God for traveling mercies!

Trip over...now back to reality!

Papi Grande leaves Bolivia

Shines, Hugs and Goodbye
Mark left on Saturday night on American Airlines. While waiting at the airport Mark and Alex had a shoe shine. Their shoes were really dusty before the shine. They gave the man a nice tip.

Karen is scheduled to fly a week later with Sandra, a girl from the home who will be staying with us and attending Central Christian. We pray that all goes as scheduled. Read Alex's blog (Gringo link at right on this page) for some insight into airline difficulties that are going on this week in Bolivia. Mark got out just in time.

I know it was tough for Mark to say good-bye to these precious children and to Julie and Alex. My turn is coming. Good-byes are always hard for me.

Twenty-eight!

Happy Birthday Alex!

We had a birthday party for Alex on Saturday, October 13. It was his 28th.
Happy birthday to a great son-in-law. We love you!
His birthday cake was strawberry shortcake with ice cream and milk.
We also grilled some yummy steak and chicken kabobs.

Tati couldn't wait for Al to open the gift she picked for her daddy. Dig the wrapping paper!

And, you can see that Alex was equally excited about opening it.
Although it's not visible on the photo, it's a purple Hot Wheel motorcycle. He took it to his office and I think he will secretly play with it when the books don't balance. By the way, he did recieve some other gifts as well.
A birthday hug for dadday. Somehow, we forgot to sing the birthday song to him. Not sure how that happened. Sorry Alex. He does look thrilled to be the birthday guy, or maybe it's that we forgot to sing to him. Anyway, it was a good day.

All "Up in the Air"

Fasten your seat belt for a small plane adventure!
At church on Sunday we heard of a tourist flight available through SamAir (South American Mission). We booked for Wednesday morning and got to the airstrip around 8:15. When we arrived they said we would have to wait because the airplane was needed for a medical emergency and had left earlier in the morning. We chose to come back at the same time on Thursday morning. It also happened to be less windy and it was a bit overcast. Take the photo tour with us; minus the bumps, noise and banks of the small plane. Preparing to leave.
We had a Bolivian pilot who is standing to Mark's right, in the blue shirt.
One reason we wanted to take the flight was to show Tati how airplane flights work. When visitors come, the Kozels go to the airport and pick them up and then take them back to the airport when they leave. We wanted to show her that people who leave on an airplane aren't still up there in the airplane flying around, they come back down someplace else. She was very excited about taking the ride! Here she is all set to go.
Co-pilots.

All set for take off. Our pilot prayed with us for a safe flight before we left.

Micah's first flight at 7 weeks old. After being in the air for a little, Micah fell asleep in Grandpa's lap and slept the rest of the flight.

Our flight was to be about 30 minutes long, we went West towards the foothills of the Andes mountains to see a water fall. It was a double falls in some rugged canyon area that doesn't look very accessible. This is also near the end of the dry season so there wasn't much water.

Above is a picture of the large river that flows North to the Amazon on the West side of Santa Cruz. Being in the dry season it is mostly sand and not very wide but when it rains water covers the whole river bed and even surrounding low areas. Santa Cruz lies just to the East of the mountains at the start of the flat lands which extend for several 100 miles towards Brazil.

While flying over the mountainous terrain we saw a lot of forested area like this(below). It was very beautiful.

We also saw areas of farm land that was cleared for cattle and crops. There are cattle trails and a river bed is this picture.

Next, we flew over the sand dunes, this is the place that many of you have visited while in Santa Cruz. They were neat to see from the air. We first flew over them the one direction and then the pilot circled and came back flying real low over the lake beside the dunes. I think we were flying at about 100 feet off the water. I thought to myself, "I hope we don't go too low, we have wheels on this plane, not pontoons." It reminded us of the IMAX movie we saw at the Grand Canyon, only we really were the ones flying(hold your lunch:).

From the Sand Dunes we flew over the Stansberry Home and Daycare. In the picture the three new houses (casitas) are on the upper right, the administration, kitchen, old dorms, the volunteers house in the lower center and the Daycare is in the upper left corner. The homes "concha" or concrete playing field is in the lower left and the one on the right belongs to the community. The Stansberry property is approximately 7 acres.

Our tour was over and it was good to be on the ground again!

After we returned to the hanger they quickly refueled and prepared the plane for another medical flight, they had gotten call just before we left of a need to pick someone up a one hour flight East of Santa Cruz that needed to come to the city for medical treatment. You can see just inside the door where they took out the two seats on the right side and and installed a stretcher/bed. The plane can haul one person on the stretcher and three other persons besides the pilot.

After refueling and a quick prayer the plane taxied down the grass runway for another flight to help with a special medical need. They also assist in mission work.

Refreshing Rain

This past week was very hot, windy and dry. The temperature hit over 1oo for a day or two. There was also a lot of smoke in the air from farmers burning their land. On Saturday evening we saw some lightening and could hear raindrops hitting distant rooftops and were just waiting for a refreshing rain. Thank God, it did rain for a few hours. There had not been any rain to speak of since the end of May. The smoke has cleared and things are starting to become more green. The temperatures also cooled down too. My (Karen's) allergies had been acting up with the dust and smoke. That has improved with the rain as well.

A relaxing Sunday afternoon

Do they look alike in this pose?

Feeding the fish with a very interested feline. Tati's cat is named "Booger."

Dressed in this outfit Micah is like a living doll! Grandma's having so much fun with both of the girls.

Riding backwards.
